India celebrates National Chartered Accountants Day every year on July 1 to mark the establishment of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) in 1949. The day recognizes the vital contributions of Chartered Accountants (CAs) in strengthening India's financial, regulatory, and economic frameworks.
- The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) was founded on 1st July 1949 through the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949, passed by the Parliament of India. It functions under the administrative control of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, Government of India.
- ICAI is the second-largest accounting body in the world, with over 2.5 lakh members and a network of over 165 branches in India and 44 overseas chapters. It regulates the CA profession, maintains professional standards, and conducts the CA examinations nationwide.
Main Point :- (i) Chartered Accountants play a critical role in auditing, financial reporting, tax consultancy, forensic accounting, and advising businesses on compliance and risk. They contribute significantly to government audits, policy implementation, and startup ecosystem development.
(ii) The first Indian Chartered Accountant was Gopaldas Padamsey Kapadia, who also became the first president of ICAI. The first Indian woman CA was R. Sivabhogam, who qualified in 1933 and joined ICAI after its formation in 1950.
(iii) The year 2025 marks the 77th CA Day, celebrated with national and regional events, seminars, startup mentorship drives, and ICAI award ceremonies to honour exceptional CAs contributing to the nation’s financial growth.
