The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Valour Day, also known as Shaurya Diwas, is observed annually on April 9 to honor the bravery of CRPF personnel during the 1965 Battle of Sardar Post in Gujarat. In 2025, India celebrated the 60th anniversary of this historic battle, paying tribute to the sacrifices made by the CRPF soldiers.


      - CRPF Valour Day commemorates the courage of CRPF troops during Operation Desert Hawk on April 9, 1965, when a small contingent of the 2nd Battalion defended Sardar Post in the Rann of Kutch against a full-fledged Pakistani infantry brigade. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the CRPF unit repelled the attack, causing 34 enemy casualties and capturing 4 Pakistani soldiers. Six brave CRPF personnel lost their lives in the confrontation.

      - Valour Day not only pays tribute to those who laid down their lives in 1965 but also symbolizes the resilience, courage, and unwavering commitment of the CRPF towards national security. It serves as a reminder of the vital role the CRPF continues to play in safeguarding India.

      - The New Delhi-based CRPF is India’s largest Central Armed Police Force (CAPF). It was originally founded on July 27, 1939, as the Crown Representative’s Police and was renamed the Central Reserve Police Force under the CRPF Act of December 28, 1949. Over the years, it has grown into a vital force for national security and law enforcement.

Main Point :-   (i) As of 2025, the CRPF consists of 246 battalions, including specialized units such as Mahila Battalions, Rapid Action Force (RAF), and Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (COBRA). The force operates under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and is primarily responsible for internal security, counter-insurgency operations, and disaster response.

      (ii) The CRPF’s legacy of bravery is reflected in its numerous gallantry awards, including 1 George Cross, 1 Ashok Chakra, 10 Kirti Chakras, 39 Shaurya Chakras, 1 Padma Shri, and over 2,027 Police Medals for Gallantry. So far, 2,255 CRPF personnel have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

(iii) On April 9, 2025, CRPF commemorated its 60th Valour Day with various events, including wreath-laying ceremonies at memorials to honor the martyrs. Additionally, parades and exhibitions were organized, showcasing the operational strength, capabilities, and rich history of the force.
