Yulia Anatoliivna Svyrydenko Appointed as New Prime Minister of Ukraine.

Appointment

In July 2025, Yulia Anatoliivna Svyrydenko was appointed as the new Prime Minister (PM) of Ukraine by the Verkhovna Rada (Parliament), replacing Denys Shmyhal. She became the second woman PM of Ukraine after securing 262 out of 450 votes.


      - Yulia Svyrydenko was previously the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of Ukraine. Her appointment as Prime Minister was backed by a majority of lawmakers, with 262 voting in favor, 22 against, and 26 abstaining during the parliamentary session held in Kyiv.

      - President Volodymyr Zelenskyy nominated Svyrydenko for the Prime Ministerial post after Denys Shmyhal’s resignation. This change is part of a major leadership reshuffle amid Ukraine’s ongoing war with Russia, aimed at strengthening domestic policy and international relations.

     

Main Point :-   (i) Yulia Anatoliivna Svyrydenko is a trained economist who started her public service career in 2015 as the Head of Economic Development for Chernihiv Oblast. Since 2021, she has held key roles including Deputy Head of the Presidential Office and First Deputy PM, leading reforms in economic recovery and governance.

      (ii) As the First Deputy PM, she was instrumental in launching initiatives on post-war reconstruction, boosting international investment, enhancing defense capabilities, and implementing programs for citizen support. She also played a pivotal role in negotiating economic diplomacy, especially with the United States.

(iii) Alongside her appointment, Denys Shmyhal has been made Minister of Defence, and Rustem Umerov, the former Defence Minister, is now Ambassador to the United States. Ukraine’s capital remains Kyiv, and its national currency is the Ukrainian hryvnia (UAH).
