India Climbs to 115th in Global Peace Index 2025 and Iceland Retains Top Spot.

In June 2025, the Sydney-based think tank Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) released the 19th edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI). India improved from 116th to 115th position, scoring 2.229, while Iceland retained the top global rank with a score of 1.095.
- The GPI 2025 assessed 163 countries, covering 99.7% of the world’s population. It used 23 indicators across three domains: Societal Safety & Security, Ongoing Domestic/International Conflict, and Militarisation. Scores range from 1 (most peaceful) to 5 (least peaceful).
- Iceland once again ranked as the most peaceful nation with a score of 1.095, maintaining the top position for the 17th consecutive year. It led other high-ranking nations Ireland, New Zealand, Austria, and Switzerland.
Main Point :- (i) At 115th position, India slightly improved its GPI score to 2.229, up from 116th last year. This marks gradual progress from 126th in 2023 and 141st in 2019, reflecting better safety, security, and lower conflict. Within South Asia, India outperformed Bangladesh (123), Pakistan (144), and Afghanistan (158).
(ii) The 2025 index showed a 0.36% deterioration in global peace—the 13th decline in 17 years. While 74 countries improved, 87 nations saw worsening peace levels, highlighting ongoing geopolitical instability and rising global tensions.
(iii) At the bottom of the list, Russia ranked 163rd (least peaceful), Ukraine 162nd, followed by Sudan, DR Congo, and Yemen among the least peaceful nations.
